MOVIE TUESDAYS at CENTER ON THE HILL:

Air-conditioned! 60 inch screen!

August 10:  Black Narcissus: This explosive film about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh tells the story of a group of nuns—played by some of Britain’s best actresses, including Deborah Kerr (An Affair to Remember), Flora Robson (Wuthering Heights), and Jean Simmons (Great Expectations)—who struggle to establish a convent in the snowcapped Himalayas; isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. It won two Oscars in 1947.

August 24: The Red Shoes: Cinema’s quintessential backstage drama, and a glorious Technicolor visual feast. Moira Shearer (The Tales of Hoffmann) is a rising star ballerina romantically torn between an idealistic composer and a ruthless impresario intent on perfection. Featuring outstanding performances, beautiful cinematography, Oscar-winning sets and music, and an unforgettable dance sequence, this beloved classic is dazzlingly restored. Movies begin at 1:00 o’clock. Bring lunch if you like; the Center for Enrichment provides snacks and beverages.

AUGUST ADVENTURE: Weavers Way Co-op, our new neighbor, has a farm at Awbury Arboretum (Chew Ave. & Washington Lane). Join us on a visit to this hidden treasure and enjoy a meal using the farm’s produce in several dishes.

Date to be announced.

Save the date ……… DON’T MISS THESE FALL EVENTS:

Tuesday Sep. 21: Lunch with Renoir at Center on the Hill. Museum of Art docent Margaret McGreal will present the recent exhibit Late Renoir, which follows the renowned painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir through the final and most fertile and innovative decades of his career. At the height of his creative powers and looking toward posterity, Renoir created art that was timeless, enticing, and worthy of comparison to the greatest of the old masters, such as Raphael, Titian, and Rubens. In this recent exhibit, Renoir’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures were displayed alongside works by younger artists; Aristide Maillol, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, to illustrate Renoir’s legacy.

Friday Oct. 1 Celebrate the opening of CHCE’s 2nd Art Show with a wine & cheese reception.

Saturday Oct. 2 Help raise much-needed funds at the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church “flea-zar” by donating your attic treasures to sell or by volunteering to work at our tables during the event
